Note: Top categories are organized by country. "Category: United States, Binkley Name Study" contains the individual states.

For unsourced Binkley profiles, please add the template {{Unsourced|Binkley Name Study}} which adds the profile directly to the Binkley Name Study Unsourced Category Page.

For Binkleys who have no parents or parents cannot be located, add [[Category:Unconnected, Binkley Name Study]] to the profile. This adds them to a certain category so people can search there to try and make connections.

Binkley Surname Origins

Binggeli is a Swiss name. Following the death of his father, Christian, Peter Binggeli, born 1704 in Guggisberg (Canton of Bern), moved to Alsace, France in 1717. [1] In Alsace, the name was spelled Binckele and this spelling continues through the church records in German in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and North Carolina. In 1725, Peter married and began what would become a large family. [2] In 1736, Peter took his family, and along with other "Awakened" families, immigrated to the New World. After arriving in Philadelphia, in September of 1736, Peter and his family settled in Pennsylvania. In 1748, his wife, Anna Maria, died. She had given birth to 14 children. Peter remarried in 1749, and continued to add to his family. Peter became a member of the Moravian Church in 1750. In 1772, The family moved to the Moravian settlement of Wachovia in North Carolina. By the end of his life, he had fathered 23 children. [1].

The Binkley spelling starts to appear in the North Carolina civil records, which were in English, in the late 1700s. Moravian records for Peter are consistently Binckele, but his children and more often, his grandchildren, became known as Binkley.

The records of the ship that brought Peter and his family to America, record the name as Pinkley, Pinkelie, Binckley, Pinckly, Bingly, Binckly, and Pinckley [3]

Hi Eric, you know you can use Category:Binkley Unconnected instead of making a list on the page, right? It is much easier to just place the category on the page than to keep up with a list.

That list was mainly for in the beginning before our categories were all set up. Many of us have been so focused in this or other projects that we didn't maintain the project page very well. - Summer

I changed the "Lineage Section" to have it point to the two separate Binkley Name Study Project pages. This is so they don't have to be updated in two different places, here and on the Name Study Project pages.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you all know that I will be going through and making some categorization corrections over the next week or so. The name studies project has specific ways to categorize; i was contacted by the categorization leader about one of my other name studies, and asked to conform my categories to the proper naming conventions. They didn't ask me to correct what I'd already done, but i feel I probably should. So, over the next few weeks I'll be working on correcting Binkley categorization. Instead of Binkleys in TN, I will be correcting to Tennessee, Binkley Name Study...and so forth. Nobody has to help out with this, I created the categories initially, so I'll take responsibility for correction. It may take some time though, so i wanted to inform you all!

Hi Binkley researchers! I have a few Binkley profiles (from Ohio), but they're not particularly close family, and I am quickly nearing the 5000 limit on my watchlist... I think they've all got the name study category on them thus far, so I may try to put any other info/sources I can on them and then orphan them - please feel free to adopt if you're able (but obviously I understand if you, too, have too many profiles already!)

If someone doesn't like the background, just let me know and I can remove it. I just got bored with looking at plain white!

All - Upper WikiTree management emailed me and said the following: "There isn't a technical reason that can't be used that way, just like preferred and middle names and anything else can be."

So....We ARE allowed to use both names in the Proper first name field. I am perfectly fine with it since we received their blessing!!!!

Many of the 23 children died young. I suppose it's good to have a space for each of them, though, since there has been a great deal of confusion in the past of the ones whose names are duplicated. I like what you've done with the outline under 2 PATRIARCH, but let's add them in order. I can work on this later today.
Okay, there are about 252 Binkleys in our category now. We can begin to compile our known lineages. We can create a free space page for each and every one of his 23 kids if needed!!, then link them all here. It doesn't matter how we do it! I think the key though, is communicating.

That's a very useful and complete article. Thank you! But I would go with the following sentence with respect to what we ought to have in WikiTree: "Or better yet, the program should have a setting whereby both given names are always used together in tandem in the computer generated text when referring to an individual."
